Blessed Are the Peacemakers

I got what I wanted for Christmas this year. Here was my list: Peaceful moments with my children, quiet time with my husband, a day warm enough to work in the garden, and at least one good ride with JohnJohn. Seems like a simple enough list now that I’ve put it here on paper, but some things are more precious than we know.

Yon Goes Another Mountain...

...I say this to John, my horse, every time we wait for a coal-laden CSX train to crawl past. Sometimes my frustration gets the better of me and I’m too heavy in his mouth with the bit, which makes him arch his neck and prance around. Maybe the engineers think John’s being showy, but he’s really acting out his rider’s despair and rage at the destruction chugging so casually down the tracks, at the gaping maw of our energy consumption.

When we stand at an overlook in a national park or glimpse a blue expanse of mountains on the horizon, the mysterium tremendum may seem beyond our influence, but it takes very little time to lay waste to these resources.
