Levi Henry

Levi HenryA bred, born and proud Kansan, Levi Henry grew up in rural northeast of his state, splitting his childhood, adolescent and, now, adult years between the home and farmsteads of his maternal grandparents in Nemaha Co. and his own home. Raised by a secularist progressive, single mother who taught to inspire and continued to learn for her own desire, Levi’s maternal grandparents supplied supplemental parenting, with great skill after raising eight of their own children. It was on the Henry farm and dairy that Levi learned the values of hard work, humility, picking yourself up by your own bootstraps, and downright stubbornness.

After a sometimes rocky adolescence, Levi went on to graduate from KSU and the Washburn Univ. School of Law with a Certificate in Natural Resources Law (Honors), which was inspired by the respect he gained for Mother Nature on the Henry farm. As the first male in his family to graduate from college, Levi maintains a deep respect for rural citizens not given the same opportunities he was granted. In many ways, he believes these individuals have intelligence and practical common sense that is somehow lost by the institutional college regime.

Married to Hilary Wanke Henry, Levi now lives in Horton, Kansas, a rural community near the original Henry homestead, which he still visits regularly. Levi has served in many key leadership roles: Immediate Past Chair, Jackson Co. Democratic CC (2001-2006); Treasurer, Brown Co. DCC (2006-Present); National Committeeman, Kansas Young Democrats (2005-2007); Second VP, KS Young Dems (2003-2004; 2004-2005); VP (2002-2003) and President (2003-2004), Washburn Law Democrats; Representative (2002-2003) and VP (2004-2005), Washburn Student Bar Association. He's also a member of Knights of Columbus and the International Lion's Club. He can be reached at levijhenry at gmail dot com. We're honored Levi has joined our community. Kansas Supremes Get it Right: Civil Liberties Find New Breath

By Levi Henry on June 20, 2008

In a landmark decision today for those of us that value the phrase "where there is injustice somewhere, there is injustice everywhere", the Kansas Supreme Court rendered the Kansas Juvenile Justice Code categorically unconstitutional for failure to provide juveniles accused of a crime in the state of Kansas the right to a jury.

'Can't We All Just Get Along?' Let the Nomination Play Out!

By Levi Henry on March 10, 2008

While I had intended to do more respectable blogging for my first entry for EverydayCitizen, especially in regards to energy, environment, agriculture and rural development, I am finding myself writing on the continued fight, still, in Kansas between Clinton and Obama supporters.

In order to clear the air on any biases, I am and have been a Barack Obama supporter, activist and volunteer since before the beginning. He is my generation's greatest opportunity for a different future. However, this personal commentary aside, I will support and volunteer for Sen. Clinton if she is crowned by the Party's nomination.

Being a Kansan, we have held our caucuses on Super Fat Tuesday in February. Obama won in Kansas overwhelmingly by a 75-25 break-down, give or take a few points. However, ironically, I am finding that more and more Kansas Democrats are split between Clinton and Obama and still feuding this out over dinners, telephone conversations, racquetball (maybe in Johnson or Douglas Counties???) and even in bars over pitchers of beers and a game of pool (the other 103 counties and can you say emergency room?).
